Trump Jr’s Bahamas Wedding Was Funded By A Putin Linked Russian Tycoon?

Russian sports administrator and businessman Umar Kremlev, who has deep ties to President Vladimir Putin, reportedly funded hundreds of thousands of dollars in lavish Bahamas wedding celebrations for Donald Trump Jr and Bettina Anderson, raising questions over Kremlin links and potential counterintelligence risks.

According to a ProPublica investigation, the celebrations took place across exclusive Bahamian private islands during the May 23 weekend. Trump Jr and Anderson had formally married in a small family ceremony in Florida before holding the larger gathering. Around 50 guests attended, including Eric Trump and Jared Kushner.

Guests stayed on a private island costing about $100,000 per night, previously used for Casino Royale and Pirates of the Caribbean. Kremlev also paid for a luxury fireworks display costing at least $70,000. Payments for accommodation, catering and logistics were processed through a Dubai entity linked to the International Boxing Association (IBA), which Kremlev chairs. His Russian speaking entourage largely kept apart from other guests.

US President Donald Trump did not attend and later said he knew nothing about Kremlev or the funding.

Trump Jr’s representatives confirmed Kremlev’s role but described it as a personal gift. They said the pair had been friends for years after meeting through the international hunting community and shared interests in boxing and conservation. Anderson called the sponsorship an unconditional gesture, while Eric Trump’s representatives said he had never previously heard of Kremlev.

Born Umar Lutfulloyev in Tajikistan in 1982, Kremlev later moved to Russia. Proekt reported that he had convictions for extortion and assault before changing his surname to Kremlev in 2010.

He founded boxing promoter Patriot in 2015 and developed links with the ultranationalist Night Wolves motorcycle club. Through the group, he became connected to Alexei Rubezhnoi, a senior Russian security official who helped him rise in the Russian Boxing Federation. Putin later awarded Kremlev the Order of Friendship.

Kremlev became IBA president in 2020 and secured tens of millions of dollars in backing from state owned Gazprom. The International Olympic Committee stripped the IBA of recognition in 2023 over governance, financial transparency, state dependence and refereeing concerns.

Kremlev also expanded his Russian business empire through betting firms including Fonbet, Pari and Liga Stavok. In 2024, he acquired control of car dealership giant Rolf after Putin placed it under state management.

Former US counterintelligence officials warned that foreign linked gifts and relationships can create access and leverage. Democratic lawmakers, including House Oversight ranking member Robert Garcia, have called for investigations into the funding and any communications between Kremlev and the Trump family.
