Trump Says ‘The Moon Is Ours’, Unveils Space Force Uniform And Appears As Green Lantern
US President Donald Trump has triggered fresh controversy with a series of space themed posts, declaring “The Moon is ours”, sharing a proposed US Space Force uniform and appearing as Green Lantern in an AI generated White House video.
Trump posted an image on Truth Social showing the Moon with Earth in the background and an American flag, alongside the words “The Moon is ours.” However, the statement does not amount to a legally valid claim of ownership. Under the 1967 Outer Space Treaty, outer space, including the Moon and other celestial bodies, cannot be subject to national appropriation through claims of sovereignty, occupation or other means.
Trump separately shared what he called the “United States Space Force service dress uniform”. The grey and black design features a charcoal collared jacket, matching trousers, black belt, boots and a cap. The accompanying graphic says it was inspired by the “discipline and functionality” of the uniforms in the 1997 film Starship Troopers and modernised for the “Guardians of the Space Domain.”
However, it remains unclear whether the uniform is an officially approved design or simply an image Trump shared on social media. Reports have described it as a proposed or possible design rather than a confirmed new Space Force uniform.
The reference to Starship Troopers also drew criticism. The 1997 film depicts a militarised society and was designed as a satire of fascism, militarism and jingoism. Critics therefore questioned the choice of inspiration, with some branding the outfits “Space Nazi” uniforms and comparing them with the authoritarian uniforms of the Galactic Empire in Star Wars. Others asked, “Are we the baddies?”
Trump’s posts came during a broader social media blitz, with critics also suggesting the spectacle could distract from the controversy surrounding the Epstein files.
The White House then added another unusual element, sharing an AI generated video portraying Trump as Green Lantern. The video shows him wearing a glowing power ring, using green light in scenes involving immigration and standing on a rocky hill overlooking an industrial landscape labelled “American Manufacturing.”
The White House accompanied the video with the Green Lantern oath, including “no evil shall escape my sight” and “Green Lantern’s light.” Green Lantern and the Green Lantern Corps are fictional creations of DC Comics, with the Corps portrayed as an intergalactic peacekeeping organisation.
The video prompted disbelief online. One user asked, “Are we actually serious?” while another said the official US government account posting a Green Lantern video was something “history will record.” Others questioned whether the increasingly unusual posts were appropriate for official presidential communication.
The developments come as Washington pursues a stronger American presence in space. But lunar exploration and infrastructure are fundamentally different from claiming ownership of the Moon, which remains prohibited under international space law.
