Trump Strait? Trump Posts Hormuz Map After Iran’s 7-Day Reopening Offer

US President Donald Trump has shared a map on Truth Social labelling the Strait of Hormuz as “Trump Strait”, hours after Iran proposed reopening the crucial waterway within seven days as part of a broader plan to halt fighting and revive nuclear negotiations.

The post came after reports that Trump rejected Iran’s seven-day proposal and told aides he expected US bombing of Iran to resume after the November midterm elections, according to The Wall Street Journal, citing US officials. However, Tehran said Saturday that it was still waiting for an official American response.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Tehran’s proposal could restore normal maritime passage through Hormuz within seven days if Washington accepted its conditions. These included lifting the US naval blockade of Iranian ports, easing sanctions on Iranian oil sales and observing a ceasefire covering the wider regional conflict.

The proposal was transmitted through mediators during the UN General Assembly in New York. Iran had previously indicated on September 22 that it could reopen the strait within seven days if Washington reduced military pressure and lifted its blockade.

The latest Trump post also revives his earlier rhetoric over American control of Hormuz. In July, Trump said the US would keep the strait open and described Washington as potentially becoming its “guardian angel”, while announcing a 20 per cent charge on cargo passing through the waterway under a US blockade.

Meanwhile, the wider regional conflict continues to escalate. Saudi Arabia said Saturday that it intercepted a ballistic missile fired by Iran-backed Houthi rebels towards the south-western city of Khamis Mushait, while Gulf tensions remain high amid continued fighting in Yemen.

At the UN, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian rejected Trump's threat to “annihilate” Iran but also indicated that Tehran remained open to diplomacy. He has since left New York for Tehran.
