NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte faces a critical diplomatic challenge as alliance leaders gather in Türkiye for a summit dominated by concerns over US President Donald Trump's commitment to NATO, transatlantic unity, and Europe's security amid growing threats from Russia.

Since taking office, Rutte has worked to keep the United States firmly engaged in the 32-member alliance , responding to Trump's long-standing criticism over defence spending. Ahead of the summit, he highlighted more than $1.2 trillion in additional defence investment by European allies and Canada since 2017, along with increased purchases of American military equipment.

Despite the spending surge, Trump signalled that financial commitments alone are no longer enough, saying he seeks "loyalty" from NATO partners after some allies declined to support recent US military action against Iran. He also suggested he might have skipped the summit if it were not hosted by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan .

The summit comes as European nations accelerate efforts to strengthen their military capabilities amid concerns over Russia's security posture and uncertainty surrounding future US military support. Recent indications from Washington about scaling back some military resources available to NATO have heightened concerns among allies.

For Rutte, the gathering is a major test of his ability to preserve alliance cohesion while managing Trump's increasingly transactional approach to international partnerships. NATO leaders are expected to focus on boosting military readiness, reinforcing collective defence, and maintaining transatlantic unity, even as questions persist over Washington's long-term commitment to the alliance.
