A political row intensified in Tamil Nadu on Tuesday after DMK leader and Leader of the Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin was taken into police custody for questioning over alleged objectionable remarks made during a protest on the Cauvery water dispute. Though he was later released on station bail, the episode sparked statewide protests and a fierce political confrontation between the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) and the opposition DMK.

The controversy began during a DMK protest in Thanjavur on Monday, where Udhayanidhi was addressing supporters on Tamil Nadu's rights over Cauvery water. According to complaints filed by TVK, supporters chanted actor Trisha Krishnan's name during the speech, after which Udhayanidhi allegedly made a double-meaning remark. TVK termed the comment offensive and accused DMK IT wing members of circulating a video of the incident on social media.

The ruling party filed complaints with the Thanjavur East Police Station and the National Commission for Women (NCW), alleging that the remarks insulted women, caused distress to the actor, and lowered the standards of political discourse. The party sought legal action and an unconditional public apology.

Following the registration of an FIR, police questioned Udhayanidhi amid heavy security as DMK leaders and supporters gathered outside, accusing the government of using the police to target the opposition. The detention triggered protests across Tamil Nadu, with demonstrations reported in several districts and multiple party workers detained.

The BJP also demanded action against Udhayanidhi, while the DMK described the case as politically motivated. As speculation mounted over his possible remand, the Tamil Nadu government informed the Madras High Court that it had no intention of seeking judicial custody. Udhayanidhi was subsequently released after questioning.

The controversy has since expanded beyond the alleged remarks, evolving into a wider political battle over accountability, freedom of expression, and the standards expected from public representatives in Tamil Nadu.
