TVK Faces Opposition Fire Over Governor’s Address, Law and Order and Unfulfilled Promises
The opposition parties in Tamil Nadu, including the DMK and AIADMK , on Thursday launched a sharp attack on the ruling TVK government , describing the Governor’s address to the Assembly as “disappointing” and lacking concrete plans for fulfilling election promises.
DMK leader and Leader of Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin termed the speech a “cut-copy-paste” version of the previous DMK government’s achievements, alleging that key issues and policies mentioned in the address were initiatives already introduced by the DMK regime.
Stalin said policies on opposing the National Education Policy (NEP) and NEET , continuing the two-language policy, seeking central education funds, poverty eradication and establishing a Supreme Court bench in Chennai were not new announcements. He also questioned the Governor’s approach, alleging that the government’s stance indicated a possible connection between the TVK and BJP .
The DMK leader accused the government of failing to address power shortages, farmers’ concerns and rising crimes against women , claiming that around 175 such cases had been reported in the past month. He also alleged that the TVK government was focused on strengthening its position by attempting to attract AIADMK MLAs.
AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami criticised the address, calling it merely a “white paper” on Tamil Nadu’s financial situation without fresh development announcements. He pointed out that key TVK poll promises, including increasing the Magalir Urimai Thogai from Rs 1,000 to Rs 2,500, providing six free LPG cylinders annually and implementing the eight-gram gold scheme, were missing.
Palaniswami also raised concerns over deteriorating law and order, citing alleged increases in POCSO cases and crimes against women , while criticising the government’s farm loan waiver policy and its handling of the Cauvery water dispute.
Meanwhile, DMDK leader Premalatha Vijayakanth welcomed some announcements but stressed that implementation would be the real challenge. PMK MLA Sowmiya Anbumani supported the proposed caste census and called for stronger measures, including a dedicated police force and more POCSO courts to tackle crimes against women.
