Two Americans, One Trophy: Shelton and Nakashima Set for Montreal Thriller

Defending champion Ben Shelton and fellow American Brandon Nakashima will contest an all-American final at the National Bank Open after both secured convincing semifinal victories in Montreal on Wednesday.

The fifth-seeded Shelton produced a commanding performance against fellow American Learner Tien, winning 6-2, 6-3 to move one step closer to successfully defending his title.

Shelton, 23, made a fast start and maintained control throughout the contest, using his powerful serve and aggressive baseline play to keep the 12th-seeded Tien under pressure. The victory was particularly satisfying for Shelton, who admitted that Tien's game had caused him problems in the past.

“Super happy with the performance,” Shelton said after the match. “Learner is a guy who presents me with a lot of problems in my game. A tough challenge to overcome.”

Shelton has enjoyed an impressive season, adding titles in Dallas, Munich and Stuttgart to his growing collection. He now has six career titles and will look to add another Masters 1000 trophy to his record on home soil.

Standing in his way is Brandon Nakashima, who reached his first ATP Masters 1000 final by defeating 19-year-old Spanish qualifier Rafael Jodar 7-6 (3), 6-4.

The 28th-seeded Nakashima held his nerve in a tight opening set before pulling away in the second to complete a straight-set victory. The result marks a major breakthrough for the American, whose only previous ATP Tour title came in San Diego in 2022.

Nakashima said he arrived in Montreal confident about his form but had not expected to go this deep into the tournament.

“Going into the tournament, I knew I was playing at a really high level,” he said. “I knew that I could get a go on a deep run here.”

The final guarantees an American champion and promises a fascinating clash between Shelton's explosive style and Nakashima's composed baseline game.
