The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) witnessed another round of political and legal action on Friday after two women corporators , representing the AIMIM and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) , were disqualified over invalid caste validity certificates submitted during the election process.

The announcement was made by Mayor Ritu Tawde during the civic body's general meeting. The action follows decisions by district caste certificate verification committees, which found the certificates submitted by both elected representatives to be invalid.

The disqualified corporators are Roshan Shaikh of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) and Bushra Nadeem Malik of the NCP . Shaikh represented Ward 138 , while Malik was elected from Ward 170 in Kurla East . Both had secured seats reserved for the Other Backward Classes (OBC) women category.

According to the mayor, the memberships of both corporators automatically ceased from the dates on which their caste validity certificates were officially declared invalid by the respective district verification committees.

Shaikh's caste validity certificate, submitted on November 23, 2025 , was rejected by the Parbhani District Caste Certificate Verification Committee on April 27, 2026 . Malik's certificate, filed on December 1, 2025 , was declared invalid by the Akola District Caste Certificate Verification Committee on July 2, 2026 .

The latest action brings the total number of corporators disqualified on similar grounds to four within a month , underscoring heightened legal scrutiny of caste certificate verification in local body elections.

Last month, AIMIM corporator Shamir Ramzan Patel from Ward 137 in Govandi and Shiv Sena (UBT) corporator Deepak Sawant from Ward 111 in Bhandup's S Ward also lost their memberships after their caste validity certificates were invalidated.

Following the latest disqualifications, AIMIM's strength in the 227-member BMC House has reduced to five , while the NCP's tally has fallen to two , potentially influencing political equations and future civic deliberations in Mumbai.
