Two Dead After Boat Capsizes in Flooded Paddy Field in Kerala's Thrissur
Two people lost their lives after a boat carrying five people capsized in a flooded paddy field near Nedupuzha in Kerala's Thrissur district , with their bodies recovered on Saturday following an overnight search operation delayed by adverse monsoon conditions.
According to police, the victims' identities are yet to be established. The accident occurred around 6 p.m. on Friday at Mallithara Kadavu , when the group was travelling by boat to a leased paddy field where fish were being reared. The boat overturned midway through the waterlogged field, throwing all five occupants into the water.
Three people managed to swim to safety , while the remaining two went missing. Personnel from the Fire and Rescue Services launched an immediate search operation, but heavy rainfall, poor visibility, and strong monsoon-related conditions severely hampered rescue efforts on Friday night.
The search resumed on Saturday morning after weather conditions improved, leading to the recovery of the two bodies. Authorities said the paddy field had been leased by a man identified as Suni for fish farming. Suni, who was among those rescued, had reportedly hired the deceased for work. However, police said he has not yet regained consciousness, delaying efforts to confirm the victims' identities.
The incident highlights the heightened risks posed by Kerala's ongoing monsoon season , with flooded agricultural fields and waterlogged areas becoming increasingly hazardous for residents engaged in farming and fishing activities.
Police have registered a case and launched an investigation to determine the exact circumstances that led to the tragedy.
