Two Firefighters Injured as Blaze Erupts at Tata Communications Office in South Delhi
A fire broke out in the early hours of Friday at a Tata Communications facility housed in the Next-Gen Tower building in Greater Kailash-I, South Delhi, injuring two firefighters and prompting a large-scale emergency response that kept crews engaged for over four hours.
The Delhi Fire Services received a distress call at approximately 2:47 am , following which an initial response fleet comprising three water tenders, two water bowsers, one quick response vehicle, one multipurpose vehicle, and one breathing apparatus support unit was immediately dispatched to the site, located opposite Savitri Cinema . As firefighting operations intensified, a “Make-4” alert was issued at 3:01 am , triggering reinforcement of resources. In all, 11 fire tenders were deployed to combat the blaze.
The fire was found to be confined to a battery room on the third floor of the multi-storey building, affecting an area of approximately 200 square feet . The building comprises a ground floor and five upper levels . Two firefighters sustained burn injuries to their hands while battling the flames and were subsequently taken to Safdarjung Hospital for treatment. No civilian casualties or injuries were reported.
The fire was brought under control by around 7 am , with cooling operations continuing thereafter to prevent any possibility of rekindling.
In a regulatory filing, Tata Communications clarified that the incident took place at a company functioning from leased premises within the Next-Gen Tower facility, and confirmed that there was no loss of life . The telecom and digital infrastructure major added that it had immediately activated its business continuity protocols to maintain service continuity and minimise disruptions to customers being served from the data centre facility at the premises. The company said it is closely monitoring the situation and will issue further updates as more information becomes available.
The cause of the fire has not yet been ascertained. Neither the telecom major nor the authorities have issued any statement on its origin. An investigation is expected to be initiated to determine what triggered the fire in the battery room, with preliminary attention likely to focus on electrical or equipment failure given the nature of the room involved. Further details are awaited from officials.
