A fresh political confrontation is brewing in Kerala's Thiruvananthapuram Municipal Corporation , with the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) preparing to move a no confidence motion against the BJP-led administration . The move comes at a time when the ruling alliance is battling a fragile majority, making the upcoming political contest one of the most closely watched developments in the state's civic politics.

The UDF has announced that it will stage a protest outside the Corporation office on June 29 , after which it plans to initiate the formal process for moving the no confidence motion. The opposition has accused the BJP administration of administrative paralysis , alleging that it has failed to address some of the capital city's most pressing civic issues during its first six months in office.

According to the UDF, problems related to waste management , the growing stray dog menace , and drinking water shortages continue to trouble residents. The opposition has also questioned the BJP's development agenda, arguing that despite repeated promises of major support from the Centre, the administration has failed to present a clear roadmap for the future growth of the state capital.

The timing of the UDF's move is politically significant. The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is currently facing a numerical challenge following the arrest of BJP councillor R Sugathan under the Kerala Anti Social Activities (Prevention) Act (KAAPA) in connection with an alleged assault case. Since Sugathan remains in judicial custody, he has not been able to take oath as a councillor.

The situation became more complicated after the Kerala High Court invalidated the oath taken by 20 BJP councillors, ruling that they had deviated from the prescribed format by invoking specific deities and "Bharat Mata." While the remaining 19 councillors quickly retook their oath, Sugathan could not do so because of his incarceration.

As a result, the NDA's effective strength has fallen to 50 members in the 101 member Corporation Council , one short of the 51 seats required for a majority. The ruling alliance's survival now depends on the support of independent councillor Pattoor Radhakrishnan , making every vote crucial.

Although the combined strength of the UDF (20 councillors) and the CPI(M)-led Left Democratic Front (LDF) (29 councillors) currently stands at 49 , the proposed no confidence motion could still become politically significant. Any absence, abstention or unexpected shift in support during the vote could dramatically alter the equation and place the BJP administration under intense pressure.

Even if the motion ultimately falls short, the battle is expected to become a crucial test of political unity, legislative arithmetic and the BJP's ability to hold on to power in Kerala's capital city.
