DMK leader Udhayanidhi Stalin on Sunday asserted that the ruling party would always remain a protective shield for minorities , dismissing what he described as malicious political campaigns aimed at creating divisions.

Speaking at the wedding of DMK Headquarters Secretary 'Thuraimugam' Kaja's granddaughter in Chennai's Thiruverkadu, Udhayanidhi took a veiled dig at political defectors , saying, "Some people left us as soon as a sofa arrived," while praising the unwavering support of party workers and minority communities.

"No matter who tries to separate us or what slanders are spread, the DMK will always remain a protective fortress for minorities and Islamic people ," he said. Referring to the current political situation, Udhayanidhi added that Chief Minister M K Stalin would continue to stand by the people, safeguard Tamil Nadu, and "redeem the nation."

He said he attended the wedding on behalf of the Chief Minister, who was originally scheduled to preside over the event. Recalling Kaja's 37-year association with the DMK , Udhayanidhi narrated how Kaja, then an AIADMK candidate against late DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi in the 1989 Harbour Assembly election , congratulated Karunanidhi even before vote counting concluded and later joined the DMK.

Udhayanidhi noted that Chief Minister Stalin often describes Kaja and senior functionary Poochi S. Murugan as the " two pillars of Anna Arivalayam ," the DMK headquarters, acknowledging their longstanding service to the party.

The function witnessed significant participation from the Islamic community , providing the backdrop for Udhayanidhi's renewed outreach to minorities. Despite his political remarks, the event also featured a rare display of cordiality as Udhayanidhi personally escorted Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK) Chief Coordinator Seeman , who attended the wedding.
