Five countries were elected to the United Nations Security Council on Wednesday, but the biggest story from the vote was Germany's unexpected failure to secure a seat, marking a rare diplomatic setback for Europe's largest economy.

Portugal and Austria won the two seats allocated to the Western European and Others Group, receiving 134 and 131 votes respectively in the 193-member General Assembly. Germany secured only 104 votes, well below the two-thirds majority required for election. The result is being viewed as Germany's first defeat in a Security Council election after mounting a formal candidacy.

Germany, the UN's second-largest financial contributor after the United States and a six-time Security Council member, had campaigned under the slogan "Respect, Justice, Peace." Berlin pledged to strengthen international law, conflict prevention and reform of the United Nations. However, analysts said criticism of Germany's support for Ukraine, its stance on the Gaza war, cuts to development assistance and a less energetic campaign than its rivals may have weakened its support among developing nations.

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul called the result a "bitter defeat" and suggested Germany's backing of Ukraine and Israel may have cost it votes. He also alleged that Russia had lobbied against Berlin's candidacy. Chancellor Friedrich Merz acknowledged the disappointment but said Germany would remain committed to multilateral diplomacy.

Elsewhere, Kyrgyzstan defeated the Philippines by 143 votes to 49 after four rounds of voting, securing its first-ever seat on the council. Zimbabwe and Trinidad and Tobago were elected unopposed from their regional groups.

The five newly elected members will serve during 2027-28, replacing Denmark, Greece, Pakistan, Panama and Somalia. Their election comes as the UN Security Council faces growing criticism over its inability to act decisively on conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza, where vetoes by permanent members have repeatedly blocked action, fuelling renewed calls for UN reform .
