Spain goalkeeper Unai Simon produced another commanding performance to enter the history books as Spain defeated Austria 3-0 and advanced in the FIFA World Cup , with the 29 year old setting a new record for the longest scoreless streak by a goalkeeper in tournament history.

Simon has now gone 519 consecutive minutes without conceding a goal , surpassing the previous record of 517 minutes set by Italian great Walter Zenga during the 1990 FIFA World Cup . The achievement came during Spain's fourth straight clean sheet at the ongoing tournament, further highlighting the team's exceptional defensive strength.

Spain have yet to concede a single goal in this World Cup, and Simon has rarely been troubled thanks to the disciplined back line in front of him. Against Austria, the Spaniards completely controlled the contest, allowing their opponents no shots on target while comfortably sealing a 3-0 victory .

Spain coach Luis De La Fuente praised his goalkeeper after the match, expressing pride in Simon's achievement and describing him as someone he considers "a member of my family." The pair have shared a long association that dates back to 2015 , when De La Fuente coached Simon to the European Under 19 Championship title before reuniting with him in the senior national team in 2023 .

Since De La Fuente took charge, Spain have enjoyed one of the most successful periods in their recent history. The team has suffered just one defeat in 37 competitive matches , while winning the 2023 UEFA Nations League and UEFA Euro 2024 , with Simon firmly established as the first choice goalkeeper.

His consistency has helped him stay ahead of strong competition from David Raya , who has enjoyed tremendous success with Arsenal, and highly rated young goalkeeper Joan Garcia . Despite the depth in Spain's goalkeeping department, Simon's reliability on the international stage has kept him as the undisputed No. 1.

The record also carries added significance because Simon has now surpassed another Spanish legend, Iker Casillas , for the nation's longest World Cup shutout streak.

While the individual milestone is remarkable, Simon has repeatedly credited Spain's collective defensive effort. With four clean sheets, a place in the knockout stages, and a record breaking goalkeeper between the posts, Spain's title ambitions continue to gather momentum as they look increasingly difficult to break down at the World Cup.
