An unexploded 51-mm mortar shell was found in an open field in Rajouri district of Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday and was later destroyed in a controlled explosion, officials said.

The mortar shell was spotted by farmers in Kayan village in the Rajdhani area at around 4 pm. Following the discovery, Rashtriya Rifles troops, along with a specialised bomb disposal squad, rushed to the location.

The security personnel secured the area and recovered the unexploded shell before carrying out its controlled destruction. The operation was conducted safely, and no collateral damage was reported, officials said.

The incident comes amid heightened security vigilance in the border district, where security forces routinely conduct operations to detect and neutralise unexploded ordnance and other threats.

The timely intervention by the security forces and the bomb disposal team ensured that the mortar shell was safely disposed of without causing any injuries or damage to property.
