A Medchal-Malkajgiri court has granted interim bail to Bandi Bhagirath, who is currently in judicial custody in a case registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act , allowing him to appear for his BBA examinations. The temporary relief will remain in force until June 25 , the court clarified.

Bhagirath, son of Union Minister Bandi Sanjay Kumar, was arrested by police on May 16 and subsequently remanded to judicial custody. He had earlier approached the Telangana High Court seeking anticipatory relief, but his plea was dismissed.

The case was registered on May 8 at the Petbasheerabad police station following a complaint lodged by the mother of a 17-year-old girl. The complainant alleged that Bhagirath had been in a relationship with the minor and later subjected her to sexual harassment, prompting the invocation of multiple sections under the POCSO Act and relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

Following the victim’s statement, investigators added further stringent sections to the case during the course of the probe, officials said.

Bhagirath, however, has also filed a counter-complaint with the police, presenting a different version of events. In his statement, he claimed that the minor had initially come into contact with him voluntarily and had invited him to social gatherings and family functions. He further alleged that he had travelled with the family and acquaintances to various pilgrimage sites as part of group visits.

According to his complaint, tensions arose later when the minor and her family allegedly pressured him to marry her. After he refused, they allegedly demanded a large sum of money and threatened to implicate him in criminal cases if he did not comply. Based on this complaint, police have reportedly registered a separate FIR and initiated an independent investigation.

Authorities are now examining both complaints as part of the ongoing probe. The case remains under investigation.
