UNSC Extends Afghanistan Mission, Urges Taliban to Restore Women's Rights

The UN Security Council has unanimously adopted a resolution extending the mandate of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) until June 17, 2027, while urging the Taliban administration to reverse its restrictions on women and strengthen action against terrorist groups operating from Afghan territory. The resolution, drafted by China, was backed by all 15 council members.

China's UN Ambassador Fu Cong said the international community expects Afghanistan's rulers to take more proactive measures to protect human rights , especially those of women, and project greater openness and inclusivity. The resolution also calls for humanitarian assistance to be delivered without discrimination and promotes the full participation of women, minorities, youth and persons with disabilities in governance and public life.

The vote comes amid renewed international concern following the arrest of at least 30 women in Herat for allegedly violating Taliban dress regulations. While the original report cited one death during subsequent protests, later UN and media accounts indicated that at least two people, including a child, may have been killed and more than 20 injured when security forces used live ammunition and force to disperse demonstrators. The women were later released, but the incident triggered widespread fear among women and girls across the country.

The resolution additionally authorises UNAMA to facilitate dialogue between the Taliban, neighbouring countries and the wider international community, support economic recovery , encourage commercial and financial activity, and assist efforts to return Afghanistan's central bank assets for public benefit. It also mandates a strategic review of UNAMA, with a report expected by March 2027.

The United States welcomed the extension but said meaningful engagement depends on the Taliban fulfilling counterterrorism commitments , ending human rights abuses and respecting international obligations. Pakistan, meanwhile, supported the resolution's focus on militant groups, reiterating concerns over cross-border attacks allegedly launched from Afghan territory, claims the Taliban continue to deny.
