UP MLC Poll Results Give BJP, SP Ammunition Ahead of 2027 Assembly Elections
The Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council election results have given the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Samajwadi Party (SP) an opportunity to strengthen their respective political narratives ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections.
The BJP won six of the 11 graduate and teachers’ constituency seats, while the SP increased its tally from three in 2020 to five this time. The SP’s victories in both Varanasi constituencies emerged as a setback for the ruling party in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s parliamentary constituency.
Uttar Pradesh BJP president Pankaj Chaudhary described the results as evidence of continued support for the party among educated voters, claiming that its vote share had increased.
However, Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya acknowledged that the BJP had expected to win more seats, adding that the party would deliberate on the outcome.
For the SP, the results offered an opportunity to project itself as a resurgent political force. Party president Akhilesh Yadav invited the winners to the party office and welcomed former BJP leader Sanjayan Tripathi, who joined the SP during the elections but finished third in the Gorakhpur-Faizabad Teachers’ constituency.
Yadav alleged that Tripathi had not been allowed to win. The seat was retained by BJP candidate Dhruv Kumar Tripathi, who defeated Independent candidate Rajeev Yadav by 307 votes.
The Congress, which did not field candidates in any of the 11 constituencies, also projected the outcome as a collective opposition gain. Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee president Aradhana Mishra ‘Mona’ linked the results to growing support for the INDIA bloc.
In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the SP-Congress alliance won 43 seats in Uttar Pradesh, while the BJP secured 33.
