UP Police Freezes Rs 635 Crore in Cybercrime Cases, Arrests Over 6,000 Drug Traffickers
The Uttar Pradesh Police helped freeze Rs 635 crore in bank accounts linked to cybercrime cases over the past year, while road accidents and fatalities declined in the first half of 2026, Director General of Police Rajeev Krishna said on Wednesday.
Addressing a programme on Police Commemoration Day, Krishna said the department had identified 10 priorities to improve its functioning, focusing on the state government's zero-tolerance policy towards crime and criminals under Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's guidance.
Several initiatives had been successfully implemented, with efforts targeting petty offences as well as organised criminal networks, gangsters and mafias, he said. The DGP said the freezing of funds across various banks in cybercrime-related cases had helped protect the money of thousands of people over the past year.
Highlighting road safety initiatives, including the Zero Fatality District (ZFD) programme, Krishna said road accidents declined by nine per cent and fatalities by 10 per cent in January-June 2026 compared with the corresponding period last year.
These measures had helped save more than 1,000 lives, he added. On the crackdown against drug trafficking, Krishna said police were targeting not only traffickers but also their networks, illegal earnings and the means used to smuggle narcotic substances.
More than 6,000 drug traffickers have been arrested so far in 2026, while over 36,000 kg of narcotic substances have been seized and 26 cartels dismantled, he said. The DGP also highlighted the department's achievements in capacity-building and training.
According to Krishna, the Uttar Pradesh Police had become the first department in the country to complete one crore courses on the iGOT Karmayogi portal, an online platform designed to support capacity-building and professional development among government employees.
The initiatives, he said, formed part of the department's broader efforts to strengthen policing, improve public safety and enhance its response to emerging challenges, including cybercrime, drug trafficking and road accidents.
