US Congress Honours Indian-American Tech Leader Soma Somasegar for Lasting Legacy

The United States Congress has paid tribute to late Indian-American technology leader Sivaramakrishnan "Soma" Somasegar , recognising his contributions to Microsoft , the US technology sector, and the startup ecosystem.

Somasegar, who passed away on May 19 at the age of 59 , was remembered by Congresswoman Suzan DelBene as an "incredible technologist, entrepreneur, leader and friend." Born and raised in southern India, he moved to the United States for higher studies at Louisiana State University before joining Microsoft in 1989.

During his 26-year career at Microsoft, Somasegar played a key role in developing Windows NT , one of the company's most significant projects. Through his leadership and technical expertise, he rose to become Senior Vice President , serving in the role until 2015.

After leaving Microsoft, Somasegar joined Madrona Venture Group as Managing Director, where he mentored entrepreneurs, supported emerging startups, and helped strengthen the region's innovation ecosystem. DelBene noted that his guidance influenced countless founders and technology companies.

Beyond the corporate world, Somasegar was also a co-founder of the Seattle Orcas cricket franchise, helping expand professional cricket's presence in the Pacific Northwest.

The congressional tribute highlighted not only Somasegar's personal achievements but also the growing recognition of Indian-origin professionals in global technology leadership . His journey from southern India to the upper ranks of one of the world's largest technology companies reflected the impact Indian talent continues to have on innovation, entrepreneurship, and technological advancement worldwide.
