Amid growing concerns over human trafficking, forced labour, cyber-enabled scams and transnational drug networks , the United States has called for stronger India-US cooperation to disrupt criminal syndicates at their source, describing trafficking as a direct threat to national security, economic stability and vulnerable communities .

Addressing the US-India Cooperation to Counter Trafficking Threats conclave in Ranchi, US Consul General in Kolkata Kathy Giles-Diaz said trafficking networks exploit vulnerable populations, fuel organised crime and undermine public safety. She stressed that under the Trump administration , American efforts are focused on targeting criminal networks before they expand across borders.

The Enforcement Cooperation Conclave , hosted by the US Consulate General in Kolkata, brought together officials from government agencies, law enforcement bodies, civil society organisations, NGOs and academia. Participants discussed strengthening intelligence-sharing mechanisms , enhancing border security and deploying advanced technologies to identify, prevent and dismantle trafficking operations.

American and Indian experts exchanged best practices on advanced investigative techniques , data-driven border surveillance systems and multi-agency coordination frameworks. Discussions also focused on victim protection, rehabilitation measures, prosecution of traffickers and capacity-building initiatives for enforcement agencies.

Giles-Diaz emphasised that combating trafficking requires coordinated action between governments, police agencies and civil society groups, saying no country can address the challenge alone. The conclave concluded with a renewed commitment to deepen bilateral cooperation against trafficking networks that affect both India and the United States.

The US Consulate noted that Washington has recently sanctioned more than 100 online scam operators allegedly linked to forced labour schemes and that US law enforcement agencies have seized nearly two million kilograms of illicit drugs and pills as part of wider efforts to curb trafficking and disrupt criminal profits.

The Ranchi meeting reflects the growing focus within the broader India-US strategic partnership on tackling cross-border crime, cyber fraud, human trafficking and narcotics networks through technology-driven enforcement and intelligence cooperation.
