US-Italy Relations Face New Strain After Trump Remarks on Meloni
A war of words between the United States and Italy escalated into a diplomatic confrontation on Friday after US President Donald Trump claimed that Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni had “begged” him for a photograph during the recent G7 Summit in Évian-les-Bains, France . The remarks drew an unusually sharp response from Rome, highlighting growing strains in a relationship once seen as one of Washington’s strongest partnerships in Europe.
The controversy stems from an interview Trump gave to Italian broadcaster La7, in which he reportedly said Meloni had sought a photo opportunity with him and that he agreed only because he felt sorry for her. The comments referred to conversations between the two leaders that were captured on video during the G7 gathering. While La7 aired a dubbed version of the interview, the original English audio was not immediately available.
Responding in a video message, Meloni dismissed the claim as “completely fabricated” and said she was “frankly stunned” by Trump’s remarks. “I don’t know why the president of the United States behaves this way toward his allies,” she said, concluding with the pointed statement: “Italy and I do not beg.”
Italy’s reaction quickly moved beyond words. Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani cancelled a planned visit to the United States, describing Trump’s comments as “serious and offensive” to both Meloni and the Italian nation. Defence Minister Guido Crosetto also rebuked the US president, saying Meloni would never beg anyone for a photograph and warning that such remarks damage the broader Western alliance.
The dispute marks a dramatic downturn in ties between two leaders who were once viewed as ideological allies. Meloni had sought to position herself as a bridge between Washington and the European Union and was the only EU leader to attend Trump’s inauguration. However, disagreements over Ukraine , the US-backed military campaign involving Iran , tariffs and the Gaza conflict have steadily strained relations.
Analysts say the episode reflects broader tensions between the United States and several European allies. What began as a dispute over a photograph has now evolved into a significant diplomatic rift, raising fresh questions about the future of US-Italy relations and transatlantic unity.
