Using a Private Bike as a Taxi? Bengaluru's Latest Crackdown Ends with 263 Vehicles Seized

Karnataka's Transport Department launched a major enforcement drive across Bengaluru on Wednesday, seizing 263 two-wheelers that were allegedly being used as illegal bike taxis despite being registered for private use.

The large-scale operation targeted motorcycles and scooters suspected of operating as commercial passenger vehicles without the necessary transport permits. Officials said the action was aimed at curbing the misuse of non-transport (private) vehicles for commercial activities, which violates the provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act.

According to the Transport Department, enforcement teams conducted inspections at multiple locations across Bengaluru city on August 5, checking vehicles believed to be offering paid rides without legal authorisation. The coordinated drive resulted in the seizure of 263 two-wheelers, making it one of the city's significant crackdowns on illegal bike taxi operations.

Authorities stated that the campaign forms part of an ongoing effort to ensure that only legally registered transport vehicles are used for commercial passenger services. Officials reiterated that private vehicles cannot be used to ferry passengers for hire unless they are registered under the appropriate transport category and comply with all licensing requirements.

The department also warned that strict action would continue against those violating transport regulations. Similar enforcement drives are expected to be carried out in the coming weeks as authorities seek to discourage unauthorised commercial operations and improve regulatory compliance across the city.

The latest crackdown comes amid continuing debates over the legality and regulation of bike taxi services in Karnataka, with the government maintaining that commercial passenger transport must operate within the framework of existing transport laws.

Officials urged vehicle owners to adhere to registration norms and avoid using privately registered vehicles for commercial purposes, cautioning that violations could lead to vehicle seizure and further legal action.
