Uzbek Duo Vokhidov, Madaminov Share Lead After Round 8 of UzChess Cup Masters
The 2026 UzChess Cup Masters has produced several surprises after eight rounds, with Uzbek grandmasters Shamsiddin Vokhidov and Mukhiddin Madaminov emerging as joint leaders on 5 points each ahead of the penultimate stage of the prestigious tournament.
Despite being among the lower-rated players in the elite field, both Vokhidov and Madaminov have delivered impressive performances against a host of higher-rated opponents. Their consistency has placed them ahead of several established stars and made them the standout performers of the event so far.
Chasing the leaders are experienced grandmasters Shakhriyar Mamedyarov of Azerbaijan and Ian Nepomniachtchi of Russia, who are tied for third place on 4.5 points . Both remain firmly in contention for the title and could challenge for the top spot in the remaining rounds.
Tournament favourite Nodirbek Abdusattorov , rated 2777, occupies fifth place with 4 points , while Indian star Arjun Erigaisi is level on points in sixth position. Arjun has remained competitive throughout the event but will need strong results in the closing rounds to improve his chances of finishing near the top.
Another Uzbek player, Nodirbek Yakubboev , and American grandmaster Hans Niemann share seventh place with 3.5 points each. Meanwhile, India's Vidit Gujrathi has endured a difficult campaign and is placed ninth with 3 points , alongside Greek grandmaster Nikolas Theodorou .
With only a few rounds remaining, the tournament remains wide open. The strong showing by Uzbekistan's young grandmasters has been one of the defining stories of the competition, while several highly rated contenders continue to battle for valuable points.
As the event enters its decisive phase, attention will be on whether Vokhidov and Madaminov can maintain their lead or if the chasing pack can produce a late surge to capture the title.
