Formula 1 driver Valtteri Bottas has taken an unusual route to the next stop on the F1 calendar, cycling more than 320 kilometres (200 miles) from Sepang in Malaysia to Singapore ahead of this weekend’s Grand Prix.

The 37-year-old Cadillac driver set off for Singapore after failing to finish the Bahrain Grand Prix at Sepang last Sunday. While other drivers and teams prepared to fly between the two venues, Bottas opted for a long-distance cycling trip through less-travelled routes.

“ Yea I'm riding to Singapore... on the gravel roads less travelled,” Bottas wrote on X, confirming his journey.

The Finnish driver has endured a difficult season with Cadillac and is yet to score a championship point. His best result so far has been a 13th-place finish at the Chinese Grand Prix in March.

Bottas retired from last weekend’s race after going off the track. He had taken a gamble by switching to slick tyres in damp conditions, but the decision did not pay off. The incident marked his eighth DNF of the season, further adding to a frustrating campaign.

Despite his current struggles, Bottas remains one of the experienced drivers on the F1 grid. He has competed in Formula 1 since 2013 and has recorded 10 race victories and 67 podium finishes during his career.

Meanwhile, Max Verstappen ended his long wait for another F1 victory by winning the race at Sepang last week.

The Bahrain-branded Grand Prix was relocated to Malaysia due to the Iran war, resulting in F1 returning to the Sepang International Circuit for the first time since 2017.

Bottas will now turn his attention to the Singapore Grand Prix, where he will look to convert his unusual journey into a stronger performance on the track.
