The Vedanta Group is preparing a major expansion across aluminium, copper, zinc, oil and gas, critical minerals and renewable energy, with chairman Anil Agarwal outlining an ambitious strategy to increase the conglomerate's business size from USD 30 billion to USD 50 billion within three years.

The Vedanta Group has lined up approximately USD 25 billion in investments over the next three years to expand existing businesses, strengthen production capacities and increase its presence in strategically important minerals and energy markets. Announcing the plans in Kolkata, chairman Anil Agarwal said the investment would primarily support organic growth and brownfield expansions across aluminium, copper, zinc, oil and gas. The group will focus on developing existing assets while remaining open to acquiring public sector assets if suitable opportunities arise.

The investment programme is part of Vedanta's ambition to increase its overall business from USD 30 billion to USD 50 billion within three years. The conglomerate also aims to become one of the world's largest mining companies in critical metals and emerge as a leading silver producer within three to four years.

Aluminium and copper will remain major growth drivers, supported by increasing demand from infrastructure, electric vehicles, power transmission and manufacturing. Vedanta is targeting aluminium smelting capacity of 3 million tonnes by FY2027-28, while strengthening its refining operations at Lanjigarh and expanding value-added products. Its copper strategy includes a proposed 155,000-tonne copper rod mill at Ras Al-Khair, Saudi Arabia.

In zinc and silver, subsidiary Hindustan Zinc is pursuing a ₹17,000 crore Phase I expansion to increase refined metal capacity from 1.14 million tonnes to 2 million tonnes. Vedanta is also expanding its South African zinc operations and targeting stronger silver production. Its oil and gas business will focus on additional drilling, exploration and enhanced recovery to address declining output from mature fields.

The group also plans to add 5,000 MW of renewable energy capacity within 12–18 months, doubling its existing 5,000 MW portfolio. It has secured 10 critical mineral composite licences covering resources such as nickel, cobalt, tungsten and rare earth elements, strengthening its long-term mining ambitions.

Vedanta's corporate demerger into five independent businesses is expected to provide greater operational focus and investment flexibility. The company reported FY2025-26 revenue of ₹1.74 lakh crore and EBITDA of ₹55,976 crore, with a net debt-to-EBITDA ratio of 0.95 times. Agarwal said the investment would largely be funded through internal cash generation, maintaining that the group's debt position remained comfortable.
