India on Friday launched Operation Amistad , the Spanish word for "friendship", deploying two Indian Air Force C-17 Globemaster aircraft to earthquake-devastated Venezuela, as the death toll from the twin disasters climbed to at least 920 , with more than 4,500 injured and over 50,000 people reported missing.

The two aircraft departed from Hindon Air Force Station carrying a 41-member contingent from the Indian Army's 60 Para Field Hospital , including nine medical officers equipped for emergency medical care, trauma management, surgery and critical care. The relief consignment comprised 30 tonnes of relief supplies, six tonnes of medicines and medical equipment, and two indigenously developed BHISHM Cube portable hospitals, rapidly deployable modular field hospitals capable of providing advanced trauma care, emergency surgeries and intensive care for up to 200 patients. The BHISHM Cubes are developed under India's Aarogya Maitri Project , and their deployment in Venezuela marks a significant demonstration of India's homegrown disaster-response capabilities.

Rescue efforts on the ground have been severely hampered by constant aftershocks and a critical shortage of heavy machinery, while hospitals weakened by decades of neglect are struggling to cope with the crushing surge of casualties. Acting President Delcy Rodríguez said electricity had been restored to about 60% of pre-quake levels, with more than 14,000 officials deployed in La Guaira , though access to the hardest-hit areas remained restricted. At least 172 people were still trapped under the rubble, according to National Assembly President Jorge Rodríguez , with nationals from Brazil, China, Spain and Portugal among the dead.

The twin earthquakes, a 7.2 magnitude foreshock followed just 39 seconds later by a 7.5 mainshock, struck San Felipe in Yaracuy state on June 24 evening, devastating La Guaira and Caracas in what seismologists say is the strongest seismic event in Venezuela since the 1900 San Narciso earthquake . The US Geological Survey warned that the final death toll could potentially exceed 100,000, based on its predictive modelling. Over 50,000 people remain unaccounted for, with independent trackers putting missing persons in La Guaira alone at more than 11,200. Desperate families across the affected areas have been digging through rubble with bare hands, citing a near-absence of state rescue teams in the worst-hit zones.

The international response has been substantial. The UN deployed 1,000 emergency responders across 25 search-and-rescue teams, while the US State Department activated a Miami-Dade Fire Rescue task force of 80 personnel and six canine units. Rescue convoys from Mexico, El Salvador, Colombia, Switzerland and the Dominican Republic have arrived or are en route. Venezuela's acting president declared a nationwide state of emergency and appealed to multilateral organisations for funds, while a $200 million reconstruction fund has been initiated through the International Monetary Fund .

Into this crisis, India stepped forward with one of its most substantial bilateral relief missions to date. Under Operation Amistad , External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar announced that the two IAF C-17s departed from Hindon Air Force Station on Friday morning carrying over 35 tonnes of supplies, medicines and equipment, including two BHISHM Cube portable modular hospitals, indigenously developed under the Aarogya Maitri Project and capable of delivering trauma care, emergency surgeries and intensive care for up to 200 patients each. The Indian Army's 60 Para Field Hospital contingent, guided by the ethos of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam , will work alongside Venezuelan authorities in search, rescue and emergency medical operations. "India stands shoulder to shoulder with the government and people of Venezuela," the Ministry of External Affairs said, adding that New Delhi stands ready to provide further assistance as required.
