
Veteran Congress leader and former Union home minister Shivraj Patil passes away at 90
Senior Congress leader and former Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil , one of Maharashtra’s most respected political figures, passed away at his residence in Latur on Friday morning. The 90-year-old leader had been unwell for a brief period, family members said. His funeral is scheduled for Saturday. Patil is survived by his son Shailesh Patil , daughter-in-law Archana Patil , and two granddaughters.
Born on October 12, 1935 , Patil began his public life in Latur, where he first served as President of the Latur Municipality between 1966 and 1970 . These early years shaped his administrative style and strengthened civic systems in the region. He later became an MLA for two terms and rose steadily in the Maharashtra Assembly, eventually serving as both Deputy Speaker and Speaker from 1977 to 1979 .
His national influence grew when he won the Latur Lok Sabha seat seven times , becoming one of Maharashtra’s most trusted parliamentarians. His tenure as the 10th Speaker of the Lok Sabha (1991-1996) was remembered for its dignity, neutrality, and disciplined conduct. Even after losing the 2004 Lok Sabha elections, he remained active in national politics and later served in the Rajya Sabha .
Over the years, Patil held several key Union portfolios, including Commerce , Defence , and Science & Technology . He served as Union Home Minister from 2004 to 2008 , a period during which steps were taken to modernise policing systems and strengthen internal security mechanisms. He later served as Governor of Punjab and Administrator of Chandigarh from 2010 to 2015.
Across party lines, tributes were offered following his demise. Condolences were expressed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi , who noted Patil’s long public life and dedication to society. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi described his passing as an irreparable loss, while Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge recalled his dignity and contribution to democratic institutions. Messages were also conveyed by the President of India , acknowledging his long service to the nation. Maharashtra leaders such as Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and BJP MP Ashok Chavan also paid their respects, describing him as a widely respected and distinguished public figure.
Beyond politics, Shivraj Patil was known as a scholar-statesman , fluent in Marathi, Hindi, and English , admired for his articulate speeches and deep interest in constitutional studies. His calm demeanour and refusal to engage in personal attacks earned him respect across political divides.
