Veteran Malayalam Cinematographer T N Krishnankutty Dies At 96

Veteran Malayalam cinematographer T N Krishnankutty, who worked on more than 70 films during his long career, died in Alappuzha on Monday, September 7.

Krishnankutty began his film career in 1960, operating the camera for 'Umma', produced by Udaya and directed by Kunchacko. He went on to become a cinematographer and worked on more than 70 films, contributing to Malayalam cinema across several decades.

One of his notable assignments was 'Ladies Hostel', the first film directed by veteran filmmaker Hariharan. During his career, Krishnankutty collaborated with several prominent directors, including Thikkurissi Sukumaran Nair, M M Nesan, P J Antony, Sasikumar, A B Raj, Venu, K P Pillai and K Narayanan.

His career coincided with an important period in the development of Malayalam cinema, and he remained associated with the industry from its earlier decades through the 1980s. His last cinematography assignment was 'Madakkayathra', directed by George Vettam in 1985.

Krishnankutty was based in Alappuzha, where he spent his later years. Reports said his funeral was scheduled for 2 pm on Monday at his residence. Kerala Kaumudi identified his residence as Thaiparambu House in Poonthuppu Ward, Alappuzha.

He is survived by his wife Lalithamma and three children, Harikrishnan, Jayakrishnan and Jyothikrishnan, according to the report.

There has been a discrepancy in reports over his age, with one Kerala report stating that he was 96. Krishnankutty's death marks the passing of a cinematographer who contributed to more than seven decades of Malayalam cinema history.
