



Veteran Tamil Filmmaker K Bhagyaraj Passes Away At 73, Funeral On Sunday
Veteran Tamil filmmaker, actor and screenwriter K Bhagyaraj , widely regarded as one of the most influential storytellers in Tamil cinema , died on Saturday in Chennai following a cardiac arrest , according to a hospital source. He was 73. He was brought in an unconscious state to Apollo Hospital , where doctors made unsuccessful attempts to revive him.
Reports confirm that Bhagyaraj suffered a sudden health emergency at his residence before being rushed for emergency treatment. His death marks the end of a five-decade-long career that significantly shaped South Indian cinema through humour-driven, emotionally grounded middle-class storytelling.
Bhagyaraj earned the reputation of a “ screenplay king ” for his unique narrative style, blending witty dialogues with relatable family drama. His landmark films include Andha 7 Naatkal , Mundhanai Mudichu , Chinna Veedu , and Enga Chinna Rasa , which remain classics in Tamil cinema.
Beyond Tamil films, his influence extended strongly into Telugu cinema through successful remakes and dubbed versions. His Tamil hit Andha 7 Naatkal was remade in Telugu as Radha Kalyanam , directed by Bapu and starring Chandramohan and Radhika. His blockbuster Mundhanai Mudichu was remade as Moodu Mullu by director Jandhyala. He also reached Telugu audiences through dubbed versions such as Vaddante Pelli , along with several other adaptations that made his storytelling style widely popular in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.
His films were frequently remade across South Indian languages, influencing Telugu filmmakers particularly in the comedy and family-drama genres, leaving a lasting impact on regional cinema.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay expressed deep grief over his passing and announced that Bhagyaraj would be accorded state honours at his final rites. Prominent film personalities, including Kamal Haasan , paid tribute, calling him a defining force in Indian screenplay writing.
The funeral is scheduled to be held on Sunday afternoon at Besant Nagar in Chennai , with large participation expected from the film fraternity.
