Viral Bihar Assault Case Triggers Probe into Rape, Panchayat Humiliation

A shocking case from Begusarai, Bihar, has sparked widespread outrage after a video purportedly showing a rape survivor being humiliated and forced to lick her own spit surfaced on social media. Police have registered an FIR, arrested one person, and launched a search for the main accused, who allegedly raped the woman.

According to the police complaint, the 30-year-old survivor, a mother of three, was allegedly raped twice by a neighbour between June 2 and June 4 while her husband was away working as a labourer. She alleged that villagers caught the accused after the second assault and convened a panchayat, which allegedly blamed her for the crime and forced her to lick her own spit as punishment.

The survivor lodged her complaint only after her husband returned home, saying she found the courage to approach the police then. Police said the alleged incidents of sexual assault and public humiliation occurred during his absence.

Begusarai DSP Nikhil Kumar said an FIR has been registered based on the woman's complaint. One person has been arrested, while raids are underway to apprehend the main accused. Police are also verifying the authenticity of the viral video, which PTI said it could not independently verify. Senior police officials have visited the village and begun an investigation.

The incident has reignited concerns over gender-based violence, caste-linked discrimination, and the role of informal village councils in imposing unlawful punishments. Rights advocates argue that such incidents highlight systemic barriers that prevent survivors from reporting sexual violence, including social stigma, community pressure, and entrenched power structures.

The case has renewed calls for swift legal action, survivor protection, and accountability for both the alleged perpetrators and those accused of facilitating public humiliation through extra-legal community practices, underscoring the broader challenges of ensuring justice and dignity for survivors in rural India.
