Visa Is A Privilege: Trump Administration Cracks Down On Birth Tourism, Revokes 600 Visas
The Trump administration has intensified action against overseas birth tourism networks , revoking around 600 visas issued to foreign nationals from Europe, West Africa and North Africa who allegedly travelled to the United States primarily to give birth and secure citizenship for their children.
The US State Department said it dismantled multiple organised networks that facilitated travel, visa applications, accommodation and hospital arrangements for childbirth in the United States. Officials said at least six companies were involved in coaching applicants and coordinating travel logistics.
In coordinated operations involving US embassies in Europe, West Africa and North Africa , authorities identified hundreds of suspected cases, including over 400 in Europe since 2024 and more than 100 cases each in parts of West and North Africa. Several individuals were also permanently barred from entering the United States.
The department said enforcement action was taken after identifying organised fraud networks through data analytics and consular investigations in cooperation with law enforcement agencies.
In a statement, the department said, “ We shut it down, revoked their visas, and permanently banned several fraudsters from travelling to the United States ever again. ” It also reiterated, “ A US visa is a privilege, not a right. ” Officials further stated, “ No foreigner is permitted to obtain a visitor visa for the primary purpose of acquiring US citizenship for a child by giving birth in the US.”
The crackdown comes amid broader immigration policy actions under Donald Trump , including efforts to restrict birthright citizenship in certain cases. His executive order on the issue has been blocked by lower courts as unconstitutional and is currently before the US Supreme Court , which is expected to rule soon.
Authorities said the operation reflects a wider global effort to curb visa fraud and protect the integrity of the US immigration system.
