West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Saturday extended assistance to the family of Indrajit Mondal , who was lynched by locals following the recovery of an 11-year-old girl’s body in a rape-and-murder case in South 24 Parganas district .

The chief minister handed over an appointment letter for the post of civic volunteer to Mondal’s elder brother Bapi Mondal and provided a Rs 25 lakh cheque to his parents as financial support.

Adhikari met the parents of the deceased girl at their residence and later visited Mondal’s family. A senior government official confirmed that the assistance was provided as part of the state’s support to the victim’s family.

Earlier, the chief minister had stated that Indrajit Mondal was innocent and assured that those responsible for his lynching would face murder charges. Police have arrested five people so far in connection with the killing.

Bapi Mondal said the chief minister assured the family of all possible help and asked him to join his new position as a civic volunteer under the Baruipur Police District .

The incident occurred after the body of the minor girl, who went missing on July 4 , was found stuffed inside a sack near Surjapur Haat the following day. The discovery triggered widespread protests, with locals blocking the Baruipur-Joynagar Road , setting tyres on fire and damaging police vehicles while demanding strict action.

Hours after the girl’s body was recovered, angry residents attacked and killed Mondal on suspicion of his involvement in the crime.

In the rape-murder case, four accused were arrested, while one accused, Prabash Mondal , died during a police encounter after allegedly attempting to snatch a police officer’s firearm during crime scene reconstruction.

Police have also arrested more than 35 people for their alleged involvement in vandalism during the protests.
