The newly formed Bharatiya Janata Party government in West Bengal has officially distributed portfolios among its expanded Council of Ministers, marking a key step in the consolidation of its administrative structure following the recent cabinet expansion.

According to official notifications issued by the state home department, senior leader Tapas Roy has been appointed as the Industries Minister , while journalist-turned-politician Swapan Dasgupta has been given charge of the Finance Department , one of the most crucial portfolios in the state government.

The allocation comes nearly ten days after the swearing-in of the expanded cabinet, which now comprises 41 ministers , including cabinet ministers, ministers of state, and ministers with independent charge. The expansion followed the induction of 35 MLAs into the ministry earlier this month, significantly broadening the council’s composition.

Among other key appointments, Dr Sharadwat Mukherjee , MLA from Bidhannagar, has been named the Health Minister, while Jagannath Chattopadhyay , who represents Suri in Birbhum district, has been entrusted with the Higher Education Department.

In further allocations, Dudh Kumar Mondal will handle the Agriculture Department, and Dipak Barman has been assigned the School Education Department, reflecting a regional balance in portfolio distribution across North Bengal and South Bengal leadership.

Siliguri MLA Shankar Ghosh has been given charge of Tourism and Parliamentary Affairs, while Arjun Singh , representing Noapara, will oversee Labour and Transport Departments, both considered politically and administratively significant portfolios.

Among ministers of state with independent charge, Indranil Khan has been assigned responsibilities for Sports and Youth Affairs as well as Consumer Affairs, while Malati Rava Roy will head the Women and Child Development Department.

Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari , who took oath along with a small group of senior ministers in May, retains overall leadership of the government as the administration moves forward with its expanded structure. The cabinet expansion on June 1, conducted under Governor R N Ravi, was aimed at strengthening governance and ensuring wider regional representation across the state.

With the latest portfolio allocation, the West Bengal government has formally activated its full administrative framework, setting the stage for policy implementation across sectors including industry, finance, education, health, and infrastructure.
