West Bengal on Saturday celebrated its first official Paschimbanga Divas (West Bengal Day) , with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Droupadi Murmu leading greetings and paying tribute to the state's rich legacy and historical significance.

In a message on X, Prime Minister Modi hailed West Bengal's contributions to literature, music, art, spirituality, science, trade, commerce and social reform , saying the state has profoundly shaped India's history and national consciousness. He also highlighted the significance of June 20, the day the Bengal Legislative Assembly voted in 1947 for the creation of a separate province that later became West Bengal after Partition.

President Droupadi Murmu described the occasion as an important milestone in the state's history and praised West Bengal's contributions to cinema, education, commerce, science, social reform and spirituality . She said the day reflects the aspirations and determination that ensured West Bengal remained an integral part of India.

Both leaders paid tribute to Syama Prasad Mookerjee , whose role in securing West Bengal's place within India was widely acknowledged. They also noted that 2026 marks his 125th birth anniversary .

The newly elected state government formally designated June 20 as Paschimbanga Divas earlier this year. To mark the occasion, schools, colleges, government offices and district administrations organised cultural programmes, exhibitions, seminars, debates and heritage events across the state.

Prime Minister Modi also reaffirmed the Centre's commitment to working with the state government to fulfil the aspirations of the people, while both leaders expressed hopes for West Bengal's continued progress, prosperity and development.
