AAP Rajya Sabha MP Raghav Chadha has triggered a political storm and widespread social media backlash after performing a special pooja in Delhi's Rajinder Nagar to celebrate Prime Minister Narendra Modi becoming India's longest-serving elected Prime Minister .

The ceremony was organised on June 10 after Modi completed 4,399 consecutive days in office , overtaking the record held by India's first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru . Chadha also posted a congratulatory message on social media, calling the achievement "extraordinary" and praising Modi for winning three consecutive Lok Sabha elections in one of the world's most diverse democracies.

In his message, Chadha said that securing three successive mandates in an era of coalition politics and intense electoral competition reflected Modi's ability to repeatedly earn the trust of Indian voters. His remarks quickly went viral, drawing praise from some quarters but sharp criticism from others.

Several social media users accused Chadha of softening his stance towards the BJP-led government. One widely shared post claimed that Chadha's " level of sycophancy has crossed the heights he used to show for Arvind Kejriwal ." Another user mocked his eye surgery, writing that although his eyes were now "fully functional," he appeared unable to see issues such as the NEET paper leak and the CBSE examination controversy .

Other critics expressed disappointment over what they described as a dramatic shift in Chadha's political image. One viral comment read, " What a downfall. He was raising relevant issues in Parliament. Now he will be reduced to pooja-path and Hindu-Muslim propaganda. " Another lamented the apparent disappearance of the " intellectual, analytical youthful energy with a critical-thinking mind " that once made Chadha one of the opposition's most prominent young voices.

The controversy has gained additional significance because it follows months of speculation about Chadha's evolving political positioning. Earlier this year, some AAP leaders alleged that he had deleted old social media posts critical of Modi and the BJP. He was also removed as the party's deputy leader in the Rajya Sabha amid accusations of engaging in " soft PR " for the ruling establishment, claims that he has rejected.

Meanwhile, Modi described the milestone as a "collective yagya" , crediting India's citizens and democratic institutions for the achievement. The occasion drew congratulatory messages from leaders in India and abroad, including US President Donald Trump, while the BJP celebrated the record as a reflection of Modi's enduring popularity and political dominance.
