WhatsApp Puts Multiple Accounts Under Review for 24 Hours, Users Report Sudden Access Loss

WhatsApp temporarily placed multiple user accounts, including several in India, "under review" for up to 24 hours on Monday evening, preventing affected users from accessing the messaging platform and prompting widespread complaints on social media.

The issue surfaced at around 8 pm IST, when users reported that their accounts had been unexpectedly restricted without prior warning. The app displayed a message stating that the account was under review and that account activity and device information were being checked to ensure compliance with WhatsApp's Terms of Service. The notification indicated that users would typically receive the outcome of the review within 24 hours.

During the review period, users were unable to access WhatsApp's messaging features. The app also provided links to guidance on responsible platform use and information related to stolen phones and accounts.

Several affected users took to social media, claiming their accounts had been disabled despite using the official WhatsApp application and without any explanation. Some said the temporary suspension disrupted work, customer communication, and daily interactions, highlighting the platform's growing role in personal and professional communication.

While WhatsApp did not immediately respond to queries seeking clarification, such reviews are generally part of the platform's automated moderation and security systems. These systems are designed to detect potential violations, including spam, suspicious account activity, bulk messaging, compromised accounts, or the use of unauthorized versions of the app. However, there is no official confirmation that the recent wave of account reviews was triggered by any specific violation or technical issue.

Users who believe their accounts have been mistakenly flagged can submit an in-app appeal for review. If the account is found to comply with the platform's policies, access is generally restored after the review process.

The incident has renewed attention on the challenges of automated digital platform moderation, particularly the need to balance robust security measures with accurate enforcement, transparent communication, and efficient appeal mechanisms to minimise disruption for legitimate users who rely on WhatsApp for everyday communication and business operations.
