WhatsApp Tests Age Check in India, Says User Data Will Stay Private

WhatsApp has begun testing an optional age confirmation feature for users in India as the Meta-owned messaging platform prepares to comply with upcoming legal requirements, including provisions under the Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Act. The company clarified on Tuesday that the trial will not affect how users access or use the messaging service.

Responding to queries, WhatsApp said users are not required to confirm their age to continue using the platform during the testing phase. It also assured that any age-related information provided by users will remain private and will not be visible to other users on the app.

The move comes after several users shared screenshots on social media showing a prompt asking them to add their date of birth, stating that "upcoming laws in India require us to ask for your age." The development has sparked speculation that the platform is preparing for future age-verification requirements in the country.

Speaking earlier in the day, IT Secretary S. Krishnan said the initiative could be linked to the DPDP Act's age-related provisions, adding that the government would verify the matter with the company as implementation deadlines approach.

Under the DPDP Act, platforms processing the personal data of children below 18 years will be required to obtain verifiable parental or guardian consent before collecting or processing such information. The law also prohibits behavioural tracking, targeted advertising and activities that may harm children. Violations could attract significant financial penalties.

Although the rules governing verifiable parental consent are expected to come into force in May 2027, industry experts believe digital platforms may begin collecting age-related information well in advance to ensure compliance.

Meanwhile, the Centre continues to scrutinise username-based messaging features across platforms over concerns related to impersonation, phishing and cyber fraud. WhatsApp has already assured the government that it will not introduce its proposed username feature in India until consultations are completed.
