WhatsApp To Block Logins On Outdated iOS And Android Versions
WhatsApp is rolling out a new server-side security measure that can prevent users from logging into their accounts if their phones run outdated versions of Android or iOS, according to recent reports from GSM Arena and WABetaInfo.
Unlike a conventional app update, the new restriction is being activated through WhatsApp’s servers. This means users can encounter the block even if they have not installed a particular new version of the WhatsApp app. The feature is currently being rolled out to specific users on both Android and iOS.
When an affected user attempts to access WhatsApp, the app can display a dedicated screen asking them to update their phone’s operating system before they can continue. The screen also provides instructions for checking the device’s current operating-system version and finding available updates.
WhatsApp’s official support information provides important context. The platform currently supports Android 6.0 and newer, while iPhones running iOS 15.1 and newer are supported. From November 30, 2026, WhatsApp will require iOS 15.5 or newer.
WhatsApp has also already ended support for Android 5.0 and 5.1, with Android 6.0 becoming the minimum supported version from September 2026. Users whose older phones cannot be upgraded may need to switch to a newer device to continue using WhatsApp.
The latest server-side restriction appears to be part of WhatsApp’s broader security efforts. Outdated operating systems may no longer receive important security patches, leaving devices exposed to known vulnerabilities and malware. Even though WhatsApp messages are protected by end-to-end encryption, a compromised phone can still create security risks for the user and their contacts.
For now, WhatsApp has not publicly confirmed which additional OS versions will be targeted by this particular login restriction. Users who receive the warning should first check for a system software update and install the latest compatible version available for their device.
