Who Will Lead Tata Sons Next? Trusts Begin Search for Chandrasekaran’s Successor

Tata Trusts on Thursday initiated the process of selecting a successor to N Chandrasekaran, who has decided not to seek reappointment as chairman of Tata Sons for a third term.

The development follows Chandrasekaran’s announcement on Wednesday that he would not offer himself for another term, citing a lack of unanimity within the Tata Sons board on his reappointment. His decision brings an end to his nearly decade-long tenure at the helm of the Tata group’s holding company.

In a statement, the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust (SDTT), which is among the key shareholders of Tata Sons, expressed its appreciation for Chandrasekaran’s leadership and contribution to the conglomerate. The Trust said his tenure had coincided with a period of significant change, growth and transformation across the Tata group.

The trustees of SDTT have passed a resolution to initiate the setting up of a selection committee at the earliest, in accordance with the Articles of Association of Tata Sons. The committee will recommend a suitable candidate for appointment as the new chairman of the company’s board of directors.

The Tata Trusts, which collectively hold nearly two-thirds of Tata Sons, will play a significant role in the succession process. Noel Tata, who became chairman of the Tata Trusts following the death of Ratan Tata, also heads the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust.

The Trusts said they would extend their full support to Tata Sons to ensure a smooth, timely and orderly transition of leadership. The process, it added, would remain aligned with the values and long-term interests of Tata Sons and the wider Tata group.

Chandrasekaran took charge as Tata Sons chairman in 2017 and oversaw the group during a period marked by expansion, restructuring and major investments across sectors.

His departure from the chairman’s succession process now sets the stage for a closely watched search for the next leader of the Tata group’s holding company. The selection committee is expected to begin evaluating potential candidates as the Trusts seek an orderly transition.
