‘Widow’s Bay’ Makes Emmy History, Becomes Most Awarded Comedy With Record 14 Wins

Widow’s Bay made Emmy history on Monday, becoming the most-awarded comedy series in a single year after taking home 14 trophies at the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards.

The Apple TV+ horror-comedy entered the awards with 19 nominations and finished the ceremony with a record-breaking haul. It collected eight trophies at the Creative Arts Emmys earlier this month before adding six more during the main ceremony, surpassing the previous record of 13 set by The Studio in 2025.

The series won Outstanding Comedy Series, beating Abbott Elementary, The Bear, Hacks, Margo’s Got Money Troubles, Nobody Wants This, Only Murders in the Building and Shrinking. It also swept all six categories in which it was nominated during the televised ceremony.

The show’s major acting wins included Matthew Rhys for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series, while Stephen Root and Kate O’Flynn won supporting acting honours. Creator and showrunner Katie Dippold won for comedy writing, while Japanese filmmaker Hiro Murai took the directing prize.

Murai’s victory was historic as he became the first Asian director to win the Emmy for Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series.

Rhys also achieved a rare feat by winning two lead acting Emmys at the same ceremony. Along with his comedy victory for Widow’s Bay, he won Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series for Netflix’s The Beast in Me, making him the first man to accomplish the double in the same year.

Earlier, Widow’s Bay had picked up eight Creative Arts Emmys, including Betty Gilpin’s guest actress award, as well as honours for casting, production design, cinematography, score, music supervision, sound editing and sound mixing.

The series follows a mayor attempting to revive tourism on a small New England island town while confronting claims that the place is haunted. Its unusual blend of horror and comedy helped turn the debut season into one of the breakout shows of the Emmy season.

The success also powered Apple TV+ to the top of the overall Emmy platform rankings. The streamer collected 28 awards, its strongest showing yet, with Widow’s Bay accounting for half of that total.

The Emmy night also saw The Pitt retain the Outstanding Drama Series award, while Jean Smart made history with her fifth Emmy for Hacks. The ceremony was hosted by Mariska Hargitay in Los Angeles.
