Wild Elephant Attack Claims Life of Senior IPS Officer’s Wife in Karnataka
Sandhya Achayya , wife of senior IPS officer Sunil Achayya , was killed in a wild elephant attack while inspecting work at a coffee plantation in Karnataka's Kodagu district on Friday, police said.
The incident occurred at Konanakatte village near Titimati , where Sandhya Achayya had gone to oversee plantation activities. She suffered severe injuries in the attack and later succumbed to them, according to official sources.
Sunil Achayya is currently serving as a Director General of Police (DGP) in Delhi.
Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar expressed his condolences to the bereaved family and spoke to Achayya over the phone. In a statement issued by the Chief Minister’s Office, Shivakumar described the incident as “heartbreaking” and prayed for strength for the family to cope with the loss.
The Chief Minister also said he had directed officials to take immediate steps to address the growing menace of wild elephants and prevent similar tragedies.
The incident has once again drawn attention to the escalating human-wildlife conflict in Karnataka’s plantation and rural regions. Once largely confined to forest fringes , encounters between humans and wild animals are increasingly occurring in agricultural lands, settlements and commercial plantations , posing a major policy and conservation challenge .
Experts have repeatedly called for improved habitat management , protection of elephant corridors , early-warning systems and community-based mitigation measures to reduce the risk of such fatal encounters. Kodagu, known for its coffee estates and forested landscape, has witnessed several instances of elephant movement near human habitations in recent years.
