A woman from a village under the Tarkulwa police station area Deoria district of Uttar Pradesh allegedly conceived nearly two years after undergoing a sterilisation procedure, prompting an inquiry by the health department.

According to officials, the woman had undergone a tubectomy at a local community health centre on March 5, 2024. About a year and a half later, she discovered she was pregnant, leaving her and her family shocked and distressed.

On Tuesday, she approached the community health centre seeking her sterilisation certificate, which the authorities reportedly declined to issue. She subsequently submitted a written complaint to the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) requesting departmental action.

Additional Chief Medical Officer A K Shahi noted that pregnancy after sterilisation occurs in one to two per cent of cases . “If the affected woman informs the department in time, correspondence is initiated for compensation. Whatever compensation is admissible under rules will be provided,” he said.

Officials confirmed that further action will be taken after examining the woman’s complaint.
