A political confrontation has intensified in West Bengal over allegations of inflammatory remarks, communal tension, and law-and-order concerns , with Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari warning elected representatives against statements that could disturb social harmony.

Addressing a BJP rally in Rejinagar, Murshidabad , ahead of the expected by-election, Adhikari targeted former Chief Minister and TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee , accusing her of being ineffective in handling sensitive political issues. He said his government would take a tougher approach against leaders making irresponsible statements.

“I am not a weak and coward chief minister like Mamata Banerjee. I will not tolerate reckless comments from elected representatives,” Adhikari said, stressing that public representatives must respect the Constitution and use responsible language.

His remarks were directed at Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AJUP) chief Humayun Kabir , an MLA accused of making controversial statements. Adhikari said he had advised Kabir to exercise caution and warned that remarks capable of creating communal tension would not be ignored.

The controversy comes ahead of the likely Rejinagar by-election , which was necessitated after Kabir vacated the seat. Adhikari said the BJP would focus on development and public welfare instead of identity-based politics, claiming that people in Murshidabad had suffered due to prolonged political tensions.

He also accused the previous TMC-led government of allowing unrest in the region over issues such as CAA-NRC protests and the Waqf Act debate , alleging that these issues had contributed to social divisions.

Earlier, during the state Assembly’s budget session, Adhikari had criticised Kabir for allegedly attempting to polarise voters ahead of the bypoll. He warned that repeated provocative statements by elected representatives could impact peace and communal harmony .

The dispute has further intensified the political battle between the BJP and TMC in West Bengal, with the ruling side emphasising governance and law enforcement , while opponents accuse the BJP of using communal issues for electoral advantage. The controversy is likely to remain a major issue as the Rejinagar by-election approaches.
