Cristiano Ronaldo's record-extending sixth FIFA World Cup appearance failed to produce the fairytale start many expected as Portugal were held to a surprising 1-1 draw by Congo in their Group K opener in Houston on Wednesday.

The result marked one of the early shocks of the tournament, with Congo frustrating a Portuguese side that entered the competition among the favorites. While several of football's biggest stars, including Lionel Messi , Kylian Mbappé , Erling Haaland , and Harry Kane , found the net in their opening matches, Ronaldo endured a frustrating evening in front of goal.

At 41, Ronaldo became one of only two players in history, alongside Messi, to feature in six World Cups. However, the Portuguese captain was unable to make another piece of history by becoming the first player to score in six different editions of the tournament.

The veteran forward came closest during the second half but missed two promising opportunities, sending efforts wide in the 68th and 73rd minutes. His visible frustration reflected Portugal's struggles against a well-organized Congolese defense that remained disciplined throughout the contest.

Despite Ronaldo's quiet outing, Portugal coach Roberto Martínez strongly defended his star player after the match.

"It makes no sense to take off the world's leading scorer when you need goals," Martínez said, emphasizing Ronaldo's experience and ability to draw defenders even when he is not scoring.

Congo, meanwhile, celebrated a valuable point that could prove crucial in the battle for qualification. Midfielder Ngal'ayel Mukau said his team had prepared carefully for the challenge of containing one of football's greatest players.

The draw was also another milestone in Ronaldo's extraordinary international career, marking his 229th appearance for Portugal , the most by any men's player in history. He additionally became the oldest outfield player ever to start a World Cup match.

Following the game, Ronaldo sought to remain optimistic, posting a message on social media urging his teammates to stay focused on the matches ahead.

Portugal now turn their attention to upcoming group-stage clashes against Uzbekistan and Colombia , knowing there is little room for error if they hope to advance comfortably. For Ronaldo, the quest for a historic World Cup goal continues.
