World’s tallest national flag at Mumbai’s Haji Ali Dargah? Trust applies, state to decide
Mumbai’s historic coastal shrine, the revered Haji Ali Dargah, may soon witness a remarkable new addition to its skyline. A proposal has been submitted to the Government of Maharashtra to install what could become the world’s tallest national flag near the iconic shrine. The plan, revealed by trustee Suhail Khandwani, aims to transform the small islet off Mumbai’s coast into a powerful visual symbol of patriotism and unity.
Situated nearly 500 metres off the Worli coastline , the dargah houses the tomb of the revered 15th century Sufi saint Pir Haji Ali Shah Bukhari and remains one of the city’s most visited spiritual landmarks. Every year, lakhs of devotees and visitors from across religions walk along the narrow causeway to reach the shrine, which has long stood as a symbol of faith, inclusivity, and communal harmony.
According to the proposal, the flagpole is expected to rise beyond 202 metres (around 662 feet) , potentially surpassing the current world record and becoming the tallest flag installation globally. The towering Tricolour would be visible from miles across Mumbai’s coastline, turning the historic shrine into a striking landmark that blends spirituality with national pride.
Trust officials say the ambitious project could cost around ₹12 crore , though the final estimate will depend on engineering designs and construction approvals. Building such a massive structure in the middle of the Arabian Sea presents unique challenges, and planners have indicated that special marine piling techniques, corrosion resistant metal structures, and high strength fabric will be used so that the flag can withstand strong coastal winds and salt laden air.
The installation will require a dedicated space near the shrine precincts, and experts are studying the area required for the massive flagpole foundation and structural support . Given the coastal location, the project must also comply with several regulatory requirements before construction can begin.
For now, the proposal is awaiting approval from the Maharashtra government , after which clearances will also be required from coastal and maritime authorities due to the environmentally sensitive location. Once the necessary permissions are granted, the trust hopes to begin the design and construction process, though a final timeline for completion has not yet been officially announced .
The announcement was made during the holy month of Ramzan, when the trusts of Haji Ali and the nearby Mahim Makhdoom Shah Baba Dargah organised a special sehri gathering attended by priests and representatives from multiple faiths. Their presence highlighted the inclusive spirit that the shrine has represented for centuries.
If realised, the soaring Tricolour above the Arabian Sea would not only set a world record but also stand as a towering reminder of India’s unity, shared identity, and enduring tradition of harmony .
