WPL Mini-Auction: Big Names Find Teams as Dunkley and Hasabnis Go Unsold

The Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2027 mini-auction has witnessed an early battle for experienced international players and Indian talent, with Australian all-rounder Sophie Molineux emerging as one of the headline signings after being bought by UP Warriorz for ₹1.10 crore in Kochi on Wednesday.

The auction, featuring 150 players competing for 27 vacant squad positions across five franchises, has offered teams an opportunity to strengthen their combinations ahead of the next season, scheduled from January 14 to February 7, 2027.

UP Warriorz made a significant move by securing Molineux, whose all-round abilities and international experience could add depth to their squad. The franchise also signed Indian all-rounder Sneh Rana for ₹30 lakh and Australian all-rounder Grace Harris for ₹30 lakh, bolstering its options in both departments.

G Kamalini, the young Indian wicketkeeper-batter, joined Gujarat Giants for ₹40 lakh. Gujarat also signed Ireland all-rounder Orla Prendergast for ₹30 lakh, adding overseas depth to their squad.

Delhi Capitals secured Indian batter Kiran Navgire for ₹75 lakh after competing with Mumbai Indians in the bidding. The signing gives Delhi another batting option as the franchise looks to build a competitive squad for the upcoming campaign.

Some prominent names, however, failed to attract bids in their initial appearances. England batter Sophia Dunkley and Indian middle-order batter Tejal Hasabnis went unsold, although players in this category may get another opportunity if franchises seek to fill remaining positions later in the auction.

With several squad vacancies still to be addressed, the auction remains an important test of each franchise’s recruitment strategy. Teams must balance proven international performers with Indian players who can provide consistency throughout the tournament.

The decisions made in Kochi could play a significant role in determining the strength of the five squads as they prepare for the 2027 WPL season.
