YSRCP Leader Vijayasai Reddy Alleges Large-Scale Irregularities in Amaravati Project, Plans to Move Court
Former Rajya Sabha member and YSRCP leader V. Vijayasai Reddy has alleged large-scale irregularities in the development of Andhra Pradesh's capital city project and announced that he would soon approach the courts with what he claims are supporting documents and evidence.
In a post on social media platform X, Reddy criticised both the ruling Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and the opposition YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) for continuing to engage in political battles over the capital issue more than a decade after the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh. He said it was unfortunate that even after 12 years of state bifurcation , the debate over the location and development of the capital was still continuing.
Reddy questioned why the recommendations of the Shivaramakrishnan Committee were not given due consideration while selecting the capital region. He also referred to the Vijayawada-Guntur-Tenali-Mangalagiri (VGTM) concept , arguing that government infrastructure could have been developed across the broader region rather than being concentrated in a single area. He said all political parties should take responsibility for ending what he described as a prolonged political contest over the capital issue.
The former MP also raised concerns about farmers who had surrendered land under the Amaravati land pooling scheme. According to him, several farmers who gave land during the initial phase are yet to receive their developed plots. He questioned the need for acquiring such a vast extent of land for the capital project and called for greater transparency in its implementation.
Making serious allegations regarding project expenditure, Reddy claimed that the government was spending nearly ₹50,000 crore on the capital project and alleged that construction costs had been significantly inflated. He contended that the branding of Amaravati as a world-class capital city was being used to justify excessive expenditure and alleged that large commissions were being generated through the project.
Drawing a distinction between the historic town of Amaravati and the capital city project, he said the ancient Amaravati is known for its cultural and spiritual significance, while the present-day project has become the centre of political and financial controversy.
Reddy further argued that discussions surrounding the capital should focus on accountability, transparency and public interest rather than political rhetoric. He said he would soon seek judicial intervention over what he described as irregularities in project costs and expenditure. According to him, the legal action would aim to bring greater scrutiny to the capital development programme and ensure that public funds are spent responsibly.
The Andhra Pradesh government has not yet responded to the allegations. The Amaravati project continues to remain one of the most debated political and developmental issues in the state.
