YSRCP Seeks CBI Probe Into Sai Krishna Custodial Death Case
The YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) has alleged that the investigation into the custodial death of Gade Sai Krishna is not being conducted impartially and claimed that efforts are being made to shield those responsible for the incident. The party has demanded a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry and called for the immediate disclosure of CCTV footage from the police station concerned.
Addressing the media in Tadepalli on Saturday, YSRCP Legal Cell president Manohar Reddy questioned the government's claim that CCTV footage was unavailable. He argued that such an explanation appeared to be an attempt to mislead the court, especially when the police department has repeatedly highlighted its use of advanced surveillance systems, including AI-enabled cameras.
According to Reddy, it is difficult to accept assertions that footage was either unavailable or that the cameras were not functioning at the time of the incident. He maintained that the absence of video evidence raises serious concerns about transparency in the investigation.
The YSRCP leader also pointed to Supreme Court guidelines , which require CCTV recordings in custodial death cases to be preserved and produced before the courts. He alleged that these procedures were not followed in the Sai Krishna case, raising further doubts about the manner in which the investigation is being handled.
Reddy expressed concern over the fact that police personnel are effectively investigating their own colleagues, arguing that such a process could compromise the credibility of the inquiry. He said that only an independent agency such as the CBI could ensure that all facts surrounding the case are brought to light.
He further claimed that personnel from the Vijayawada Commissionerate's Task Force had travelled to Markapuram and brought Sai Krishna before handing him over to the Krishnalanka Police Station. Alleging that Sai Krishna was subjected to ill-treatment while in custody, Reddy noted that questions still remain unanswered regarding the circumstances leading to his death.
The YSRCP also sought clarity on whether any complaint had been registered regarding the alleged malfunctioning of surveillance cameras and how many police personnel from the Krishnalanka Police Station had been questioned so far. The party alleged that crucial details are missing from official records and accused the authorities of acting under political pressure to protect senior officials linked to the case.
