Zach Johnson Seals Back-To-Back Champions Wins With Pebble Beach Triumph

Zach Johnson continued his extraordinary first season on the PGA Tour Champions, winning the Pure Insurance Championship at Pebble Beach on Sunday for his second consecutive victory and sixth title of the season.

Johnson closed with a superb 7-under 65 in foggy conditions to finish at 14-under 202 and secure a two-stroke victory over former LIV Golf player Henrik Stenson, Steven Alker and Rory Sabbatini.

The victory came just a week after Johnson won the Sanford International in South Dakota, giving the former major champion back-to-back titles on the 50-and-over circuit.

It was Johnson's sixth victory in only 15 starts on the PGA Tour Champions. The win also moved him ahead of Stewart Cink in the tour's victory standings.

Johnson began the final round among a tightly packed group of contenders but steadily pulled away on the back nine. He eagled the par-4 second before adding a birdie on the 11th to join Sabbatini at 12 under.

A birdie on the par-4 13th put Johnson outright in front, and he maintained his advantage through the closing stretch.

On the par-5 18th, Johnson took an aggressive line off the tee and reached the green in two. He then two-putted from 35 feet for a birdie, finishing his round with a 65 and sealing another emphatic victory.

“To add this majestic spot to the list of wins is, again, my dreams never got that far,” Johnson said after the victory. “I've got an attitude of gratitude right now. I never thought I'd ever amount to this.”

Sabbatini produced the best round of the week, shooting a 9-under 63, but his strong finish was not enough to catch Johnson. He finished at 12 under after parring the final two holes.

Stenson closed with a 68, while Alker carded a 67. Alker entered the tournament on a remarkable run of three consecutive victories, including one on Europe's Legends Tour.

Johnson, a native of Iowa, previously won 12 times on the PGA Tour, including the 2007 Masters and 2015 British Open. His latest victory at Pebble Beach adds another prominent venue to an already impressive list of achievements.

The tournament also featured players paired with junior golfers from The First Tee programme representing chapters from across the United States.
